10:00 AM Reading and Signing with Chris Van Dusen
Chris Van Dusen will be reading from his newest book, the hilarious President Taft is Stuck in the Bath, illustrated by Van Dusen and written by Mac Barnett. His event will begin at 10 am and he’ll be staying to autograph books and meet fans until noon. Van Dusen is the creator of many outstanding books for children, including Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee, If I Built a House, The Circus Ship, and many others. About President Taft is Stuck in the Bath, he says, “This is just the kind of outrageously silly story I love to illustrate. Plus, President Taft was a blast to paint!”

10:00 AM Children’s Book Fair
Meet several Maine children’s authors/illustrators, including Chris Van Dusen. Get their autograph, hear their stories and see their work!

_MG_2395Josh Alves is an Illustrator/Cartoonist who gets to doodle with his wife and kids in Maine! His work includes illustrations for books, graphics/animations for iPhone games, and his own comics and stories. He is the creator of the all-ages, puzzle-comic series “Adventures of the Araknid Kid” as well as the single-panel comic strip “Tastes Like Chicken”!

 

Ellen TooleEllen Toole is the co-author of the online comic strip “Greetings from Gracieland” which she creates with Jimmy Gownley. Jimmy’s new memoir THE DUMBEST IDEA EVER features Ellen as a character and details their true story from long before the creation of GRACIELAND.

 

hazelmitchellHazel Mitchell is originally from Scarborough in Yorkshire, UK. She moved to America in 2000 and now lives and works in Maine. Hazel still misses fish and chips and mushy peas, (but she’s learning to love lobster). She have two dogs, two horses, a cat and several snow shovels.

 

Darlings-Dream-Car-Creator

11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Darling’s Dream Car Creator
Inspired by Chris Van Dusen‘s “If I Built a Car,” festival sponsor Darling’s will give kids the opportunity to tap into their imaginations and dream up a concept car of their own. Kids will sit down at a concept station (drawing table) and sketch out their ideal car. When their concept is complete they will take it over to one of our artists who will work with them to turn it into a sketch that they can keep. Then the kids will have the opportunity to get their picture taken with their sketch and the artist that helped them using the new Darling’s portable photo booth. The pictures will be posted on Facebook and ten kids will be selected to receive a complimentary copy of “If I Built a Car.”

Kid Kitchen with Chef on Demand
Join Chef on Demand and see that making healthy choices can be as easy as knowing the ingredients in your dessert. Meet Chef Cliff & learn how to make a parfait using sweet pastry cream, whipped cream, & fresh berries. Make your own parfait & enjoy a fresh sweet snack! Special guests Food and Medicine will be on hand to offer information on how to access fresh, local ingredients. While supplies last!

Sometimes there’s nothing better than sitting at a table with friends (or meeting new ones) and enjoying a board game. The Bangor Area Gamers Guild (BAGG) will be on hand to lead, teach and PLAY some fun board games. They’ll have some old favorites and maybe some new ones that everyone can sit down and enjoy together.

Here’s your chance to leave your mark on Downtown Bangor. Artist Jill Gardner will demonstrate some of her techniques when creating chalk art and give you the opportunity to work with her. Create your masterpiece on our sidewalk canvas or simply let us know you were there!

With music playing and cameras rolling kids can lip sync and dance to Pharrell Williams’ song “Get Happy.” Video segments will be edited to create one large, “Bangor Gets Happy” video. Families welcome, adults and kids! Parents’ permission is required to be videotaped.

Slime Factory
Come make slime in the sunshine with the Maine Science Festival and learn a little about how chemicals we come into contact with every day can combine to make something totally unexpected! In keeping with the Maine Science Festival’s focus on the idea that science is everywhere, we’ll talk a little about how chemical engineers use chemistry and machines to produce things like paper and biofuels on a large scale. We’ll have a “slime plant” that will show how industrial scientists can vary what they put into their product to change the look or function of the end result. Fun for all ages, but be prepared to get a little slimy (and take home a little slime of your own)! Ages 5 and up. While supplies last!

Cross-cultural Exploration
CISV Maine educates and inspires action for a more just and peaceful world. Come learn about different cultures through games, music, and artifacts. Put together a CISV Passport and have fun with CISV Energizers throughout the day. Ages 5 and up.

Artwalk Mural
The Downtown Bangor Arts Collaborative will be hosting a collaborative mural for children to paint. The idea is to allow them the ability to express themselves freely on the mural while filling in the word ARTWALK. After the festival, the DBAC will cut the letters out and display them around town during the four Artwalks they host throughout the year.

Endangered Species Day
Bangor Public Library
Staff from NOAA Fisheries Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Penobscot River Restoration Trust and the Endangered Species Coalition will provide a variety of family-oriented activities and art projects to highlight  the recovery of endangered species in Maine. Children’s activities will include crafting an endangered species mural, salmon migration games, and a stream table. The Bangor children’s library will also feature a collection of books about endangered species.

Maine Discovery Museum
Join a quartet from the Bangor Symphony Orchestra for a FREE kid-friendly concert and instrument petting zoo at the Maine Discovery Museum. Featuring familiar classics by Mozart and Vivaldi, fiddle tunes, and recent hits, kids will discover the full range of the string quartet in a fun and relaxed setting. Ideal for children ages 3 to 8; all ages welcome. Instrument petting zoo to follow approximately 30 minutes of music.

The Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers are performing the morning of Kid Central Festival at the Bangor Opera House. Join them and their hosts,Penobscot Theatre, for a free post-show Q&A and behind-the-scenes look into the world of puppetry starting at 11:30 am. Jungle Book Scavenger Hunt
Robinson Ballet
Children ages 6-12 are invited to explore all 4 floors of the Robinson Ballet studios. Each child will be given a “Jungle Book” map and synopsis of the Robinson Ballet’s “The Jungle Book” which will be performed on May 17 & 18 at the Gracie Theater. Children will have to find all the characters, collect their stickers and place it on their map. Return to the completed map to the front desk to receive a prize! Stay for a sneak preview of “The Jungle Book” informal dress rehearsal in the studio starting at 2:00 PM and see all the characters come to life. Ages 6 and up.

Bangor Public Library
Imagination is the seed of art, hope and ideas. Imagine; the word itself invokes great possibilities, wondrous childhood memories of imaginary adventures. Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” A strong, healthy imagination is precious; this workshop enhances and nurtures one’s imagination through fun group activities. Creative imagination introduces us to limitless adventures anywhere for everyone. Each workshop is approximately one half hour and is limited to 15 participants. Ages 6 and up.
