Kids love to dress up and every year we invite them to enter our Superhero Costume Contest! Show off your cape and tights at our annual parade of heroes starting at 2 pm in Kid Central HQ (aka Bagel Central). Categories include “Best Original Costume” and “Most Likely to Save the Day.”
Here are some of last year’s super costumes:
Each year, Kid Central Festival is the result of the community at large coming together, being supportive and having fun — and it shows on the faces of hundreds of kids!
We are especially pleased to have Darling’s as a Sharing & Caring Sponsor this year. Darling’s is a family-owned and operated retailer of New and Used vehicles in Maine, with locations in Bangor, Brewer, Ellsworth and Augusta. Their commitment to community and family is exciting to see as part of the Festival and we can’t wait to tell you about a Surprise Activity they are bringing to the event! Details soon …
From humble beginnings selling cars, trucks and bicycles in 1903 to one of the largest dealership groups in the State of Maine, Darling’s is proud to be one of the most recognizable and trusted names in Maine business. Built around our commitment to customer satisfaction and employee well-being, Darling’s has grown from one brand, one location to fourteen brands offered at six locations around the state including three in Bangor, two in Ellsworth and one in Augusta. Through hard work and commitment to strong values the Darling’s family is now in its fifth generation striving to meet the automotive needs of our customers. As a testament to our focus on customer satisfaction, Darling’s routinely ranks among the top new car dealers in New England and our service department is second to none. The Arts are alive in Downtown Bangor! At this year’s Kid Central Festival, children of all ages will have a chance to engage and enjoy many offerings from some of Bangor’s wonderful arts organizations. Some highlights include:

Drop by the University of Maine Museum of Art anytime between 11:00 am and 4:00pm with your whole family to celebrate Kid Central Festival! Children and their families will learn about celebrations throughout the world from England to Mexico to Japan! Create traditional May baskets, Koinobori Flags (carp shaped flags from Japan), Cinco de Mayo crafts and many other artistic explorations of spring. All supplies are FREE!
Chris Van Dusen will be reading from his newest book, the hilarious President Taft is Stuck in the Bath, illustrated by Van Dusen and written by Mac Barnett. His event will begin at 10 am and he’ll be staying to autograph books and meet fans until noon.
Van Dusen is the creator of many outstanding books for children, including Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee, If I Built a House, The Circus Ship, and many others. About President Taft is Stuck in the Bath, he says, “This is just the kind of outrageously silly story I love to illustrate. Plus, President Taft was a blast to paint!”
George Washington crossed the Delaware in the dead of night. Abraham Lincoln saved the Union. And President William Howard Taft, a man of great stature — well, he got stuck in a bathtub. Now how did he get unstuck? Author Mac Barnett and illustrator Chris Van Dusen bring their full comedic weight to this legendary story, imagining a parade of clueless cabinet members advising the exasperated president, leading up to a hugely satisfying, hilarious finale.
We’re getting ready for this year’s Kid Central Festival and that’s means lots of planning and updates to the website. Stay tuned in the coming months for announcements about what to expect at our Fourth Annual event!
It’s going to be a SUPER Saturday and we can’t wait to see always those little smiling faces having fun today.
Don’t forget to make Kid Central Headquarters your first stop so you can grab an Activity Map of all the fun things to do at the festival. It’s located at 33 Central Street (Bagel Central).
See you soon!
Local artist Mark Ricketts has a very exciting new picture book for kids coming out next year. For now, he’s shared this great Pirate Cat with us that you can print out and color!
Don’t miss Mark’s newest book (for a slightly older crowd), The Flatlander’s Guide to Maine. His book launch party is at the May Greendrinks event at the Bangor Y on May 14.
We’re excited to have local cartoonist/illustrator Josh Alves returning to Kid Central Festival this year. He’ll be at The Briar Patch from 10-11 AM where you can join him in making a Putrid Puppet Pal from the Zeke Meeks chapter book series. Catch him for his autograph then or stop by his table in Kid Central HQ at 11 AM. Josh will give you a sneek peak of his new picture book, Lilly Bristol, Dinosaur Wrangler and the Town a Tyrannosaurus Wrecks!
Here’s a special Lilly Bristol coloring page you can print out at home and bring to show Josh at the festival.
